Knowing God Personally
Nancy McGuirk
Bible Commentator - Author

Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. John 17:3

Every Christian knows God but far fewer know Him intimately. I heard someone ask once, “Why do some people seem closer to God than others?” And the answer given was, “Maybe they spend more time with Him.”

When my parents met each other, they knew about one another but didn’t really know each other that well yet. There was a sense of respect and admiration, and a desire to please the other. When they decided to marry they made a commitment not only to love one another, but to be there for each other at all times. This is exactly what happens to us when we accept Christ into our hearts. We have stepped up to the altar and said, “I do!”

After over half a century of togetherness, my parents know one another intimately. They know what the other needs without words being spoken; they have always been there for each other. I believe they love each other more today than ever before. They are known by all my friends as the couple that holds hands wherever they go.

Saying “I do!” to God means lots of things: I do accept that Your Son died for me to give me eternal life. I do accept that You love me just as I am and are willing to forgive me of my past. I do recognize that You are here for me to turn to and to forgive me of my future sins. And I do want a long, loving relationship with You. I want to communicate with You every day, so much so that I know what You want without even asking. I want my love to become totally dependent on You in my life.

Have you been to the altar with Jesus? If you’re not sure, it might be time to say, “I do”—and then become known as the person who walks hand-in-hand with God.

Heavenly Father, I gladly say “I do” to You! I hold out my hand and ask You to take it and allow me to be Your moment-by-moment companion all of my days. Amen.
