When our children were old enough for us to begin taking longer family vacations, there were four females and two males in our group. Guess which four brought the most luggage? And guess which two ended up carrying most of it? Over time, my daughters and I learned the skills of traveling light—and my husband and son were grateful. All journeys are more enjoyable the less baggage we choose to drag along with us.

We all love and adore our parents, but some of us are able to detach a little better than others. My father died when I was twentytwo, and my mother lived as a widow for the next thirty years. For as long as I can remember, my mother and I shared an incredibly close relationship. Her love for me was unconditional, and she extended that love to my husband and children.
